Second, the only reason such a moment of improvisation stands is because of the realist nature of the film - and the fact that Elia Kazan allowed it to. If James Stewart had done the same thing in It's a Wonderful Life, Frank Capra would have said, 'Cut! Why the hell are you doing that shit, Jimmy?". Actors before Brando were acting in a different type of film. They were almst foribidden to improvise. Mumbles just benefited from a shift in styles of film-making.

Gaah, not the glove scene! Don't me get wrong - I think it's great, but it comes with the baggage of Brando's 'genius' improvisation. First, he always had a dependence on props, anyway. His hands couldn't leave anything alone. As Kowlaski, he was forever flicking imaginary bits of fluff in the air. In all his performances, he's either fondling some object, or holding one hand out in front of himself - no matter what the class, nationality, or intellect of the character he's playing.

Well, the scene with the gloves was unexpected, and yet Brando was so quick to react to it, by just picking that and wearing it on his left hand. That meant something!! and it was really clever by both him and the other actress, whose name i don't remember.. but that scene is famous because of that part.. Kazan didn't know how to explain the fact that she kept talking to him after that stupid guy said "You were there..." So, definitely the Oscar MEANT something!!!!

Bollocks. Oscars don't prove anything. Forrest Gump won best film over Pulp Fiction. Does that prove it's a better film? Anyway, Brando only lost out for Streetcar because Humphrey Bogart had given a great performance in The African Queen and everyone felt he was due an Oscar. All the other actors in Streetcar won that year so you can guarentee Brando, by far the best among them, would have won had it not been for Bogart.

In my humble opinion,brando's performance in this film is the greatest in american cinema,some have came close with tour de force performances,de niro-raging bull/taxi driver,pacino-scarface,nicholson-cuckoos nest, but this is the champion for me, backed up by truly great performances by steiger,cobb,malden and saint,hats off to elia kazan,what performances he pulled out of his cast in many films.

You really have to watch this movie. I recommend it to anyone who will listen to me. If this movie doesn't affect you, I don't know what would. To me, this is the best acted movie ever and Marlon Brando's finest work ever. Brando is my favorite actor anyway, but, this to me is just PERFECTION. Please watch it and see for yourself. When you are done with this one, check out a Streetcar Named Desire :)

how can u say that this film has no plot??!! it's the greatest storyline in film history! it's a metaphor for kazan's own struggle with his peers after he testified in front of the HUACC. Brando's character undergoes a massive transformation by going from an aide to Johnny Friendly...to ratting them out in front of the waterfront commission...therefore helping edie in solving the murder of her brother. It has to have one of the best endings in movie history! even scorsese copied it

Not the best movie, but certainly not the worst. Plot??? No plot, just a story-whether you should say nothing and stick with your "mates" even if they do "naughty" business, or do the right thing, even if it's gonna hurt. Loads of political themes at the time for Kazan and the communist witch hunt of the 50s. Acting??? No- realism/Method. No explosions/ILM/frontal nudity. Overall- great film, great acting, and load of up yours from the Nebraska Kid.

Great scene from my favorite movie. This was a movie about the McCarthy era - the Mob in this movie were the Communists in Hollywood who muscled in, those who dared name them, named names were attacking for being traitors, for ratting on their own kind. Yeah, there were mob criminals on the docks in New York and yes, the Communists had most of Hollywood in the 30s, 40s, early 50s. Now it is worse. The director of this film E. i think brando was going for a different emotion than anger. The director says it best in the editorial review. He says that instead of getting agressive like you'd expect in every other scene of this kind, brando does something completely different. In its essence this is a love scene between the two brothers. Just look at the way he handles the gun like its the hand of a lover. Pure heartbreak

the reason that Brando is considered a genius is because he had the insight to bring realism into acting in a time when it wasn't that common...so compared to actors from the 50's I would say that Brando was a genius (although he continued to outshine current actors)

Your right, many fans just would have rather not seen them going the way they have. There is just that slight feeling of less emotion for many fans but I think it is just that the way they view life has changed as they have gotten older and therefore the emotions the put into their songs might have changed? Of course this is just pure speculation but it suits me. Just got the new album for 'Sinterklaas' I think it's great. P.S. Yes I'm Dutch.

@ VintageRabbit: the best way I can think to explain it is that it feels like there's something missing from the new material. a lack of passion, I think, but I'm not sure why. don't get me wrong, I'm grateful they haven't just done the same stuff for each album, but they've changed a lot since they started, and for some fans, what the band sounds like now isn't what they want to listen to. doesn't matter much but if you were looking for an explanation, that's what I'd offer

No matter what FFAF do i think theyre amazing. Personally, i loved casually dressed, hours, tales and now memory and humanity. Theyve changed a bit but not as much as alot of people are making out i think. Besides, though tales was less hardcore, it was powerful in its own way. saw these guys in birmingham the other day. I remember seeing the trailer, and this scene came up, and that is what convinced me to rent the movie. This scene always gives me goosebumps... it made me REALLY love marlon brando for his acting skills and, of course, his handsomeness =] Oh, to be Edie in this scene! thanks for posting =]

The problem with establishing how serious a battle, campaign or conflict generally is with the word 'casualties' because that includes wounded, missing and captured as well as killed. According to wikipedia, there were 22,717 total casualties at Antietam, of which 3,654 were killed in action. Missing usually means killed though, so the figure is probably higher. Terrible battle.

If you go by deaths, it was, as far as natural disasters. Antietam was some 20k "Americans" in 1 day; about half that if you only count the Federal side. Galveston was low estimate 8000, higher around 12k. Definitely very bad for deaths.

They were looking for the safest bldgs. for shelter, not standing watching on the beach! With wind forces up to 150 mph, possibly as high as 200 mph? by your words i dont think you live in a hurricane prone area, i was in new orleans for katrina and have lived most of my life on the gulf coast. you have to understand two days out, thats when most people evacuate and its not an exact science more like a guess for news weather. katrina was horrible but it could of been prevented with better levees or the storm going 50 miles east. either way fuck you I've never ran from a hurricane and never will.

About 8,000 people died from this storm. so many people died because instead of looking for cover hundreds of people stood on the beach waiting for the storm to come so they could marvel at the waves. they had no idea how big it was or that it would be the last thing they ever saw. Kinda eerie!

I agree,some people actually walked out of new orleans! I would never have waited for the government[welfare] to help me! Any able bodied person should have made every effort to help elderly and ill people to get out, so many people were abandoned there like all those poor animals!People need to wake up and do the right thing!

pj, in 1900 they didn't have FMEA, or welfare, or subsidies. People were on their own. No trailer to the rescue, just their neighbors helping them. People looked out for each other, because they didn't have the mentality that it was the government's duty to take care of them. So, you might say, the ever increasing progession of the governmental into social programs over the last 80 years has allowed people to sink deeper into complacency and self centeredness.

With no warning system and zero visability that night, its amazing anyone did, the Bolivar light house keeoer managed to save over a hundred people by holding up in the lighthouse, they had to burn the bodies in the streets to avoid the health problems that would follow.
